Emerging Mortality

Keral Jaintilal

‘In this age of genetic manipulation, familiar to the ‘doctoring’ where scientists and artists portray process of reworking, amending of natural, things are ‘fixed, created, perfect... man-made, man meddled-with, man-morphed and so ‘how natural is nature?’ (Glover, 2008) As humans we like to have things aesthetically pleasing, usually in a certain order and uniformed. My work portrays the driving force of human desire attempting to shape and control the natural world; works show our own perception of nature - to provoke realisation towards uncertain future; if we don’t look after present nature, all will be left is the unnatural industrial/impressions of nature. Leading to the question, why is it that the constructed/framed nature always more valued/treated better than the nature we have outside? Will competing with nature ever stop? Prints show evident human control/transition of wildflowers; trapped between metal plates; trying to escape/reaching for sunlight – embossed fragility; natural structures crushed within own juices forming own mortality; plight of present nature fabricated using bold colours/hung as memory to encourage viewers to inspect the ‘overlooked’ further.

My career aim is to become an Art Teacher; I will be applying for PGCE/training course next year.
