Juliana Velasco is a multi-media student who has created a colourful collection based on her Colombian Heritage and upbringing.
Juliana Velasco's collection is inspired by Colombia’s landscapes and people. Having grown up in a matriarchal society her collection takes a lot of inspiration from important women her life. For this collection she took inspiration from traditional techniques and processes found in Colombian textiles that have been passed down through generations traditionally from mother to daughter. Taking inspiration from a poem written by her younger sister about their upbringing and family life, Juliana has developed a collection of samples that reflect the vibrant and joyful life she has lived. Juliana’s use of colour throughout the collection is an homage to Colombian art and nature. Colombia is the number one producer of corsets in the world, and with societies obsession with body image being constantly present in most women’s lives today, Juliana married these two ideas and put a positive spin on it, making the main goal to create contemporary corsets that give women confidence.
