Jasmin Woodroffe

I'm a stylised game artist who creates colourful, detailed and entertaining stories and digital paintings intended for video and mobile games. For my most recent project, I created a fun and unique social network world for young girls, called Beau Island. Users create themselves and a 'beau', which they train and look after to prepare for head-to-head competitions with their friends. My other project is 'History Popstars', which is a face-recognition mobile game where users generate funny memes of famous history figures singing songs and dancing embarrassingly.

I created Beau Island for 12- to 16-year-olds for the intention of reducing the time they spend on social media. From questionnaires, I found out that 70% of girls had heard of or experienced the negative effects of social media, so I wanted to create a safer and funner environment where they could talk and play with their friends. Beau Island is a funner take on popular love shows, as it lets the user create their own boyfriend/girlfriend, which they look after and develop their skills. For example, their smooch quality or cleanliness. The aim is to keep increasing your Beau's traits, as there are frequent head-to-head competitions between friends, and having high-levelled traits will help you win them. On the other side of this, it's a social community where people can chat, hangout and dress and style their avatars together. I created History Popstars for 18- to 25-year olds with the intention of refreshing their knowledge of general world history. The idea came to me when I struggled to remember commonly known history facts, and wished there was a fun way of learning them again. The current trend and popular thing to do at the time with young adults was the new 'Animoji' on the iPhone X, so I used this as inspiration to create a game where users would make famous history figures sing funny songs and do funny dancing using face-recognition. The user would be informed about the figures life and the events that went on in that time, before being able to complete karaoke sessions with them.
