Beau Island Hangout Area
This is one of the many hangout areas in Beau Island. It's where users will come to chill out and chat with their friends. There are also small activities dotted around where users can train their Beau's at. There are certain areas you can access with tokens, which you gain from winning matches. These areas include exclusive objects or activities you can use to level up your beau's traits.
Tap to the Rhythm mini game
This is one of the mini game activities on Beau Island. Users will make their Beau use the running machine, and tap to the rhythm of the music that plays. The timeline of circles on the running machine indicates when you need to tap. This activity will increase the Beau's fitness, but if they can't keep to the beat, they will get dirty and reduce their cleanliness trait.
Beau Island's Salon
This is where users come to change their hair styles and buy accessories. This is a live activity where everyone can see what everyone is doing and buying. I wanted to create a social experience where users can go to the salon with their friends and help each other decide what looks good on them.
History Popstars
A face-recognition mobile game where users generate funny memes of famous history figures singing songs and dancing embarrassingly.
Jasmin Woodroffe
I'm a stylised game artist who creates colourful, detailed and entertaining stories and digital paintings intended for video and mobile games. For my most recent project, I created a fun and unique social network world for young girls, called Beau Island. Users create themselves and a 'beau', which they train and look after to prepare for head-to-head competitions with their friends. My other project is 'History Popstars', which is a face-recognition mobile game where users generate funny memes of famous history figures singing songs and dancing embarrassingly.
I created Beau Island for 12- to 16-year-olds for the intention of reducing the time they spend on social media. From questionnaires, I found out that 70% of girls had heard of or experienced the negative effects of social media, so I wanted to create a safer and funner environment where they could talk and play with their friends. Beau Island is a funner take on popular love shows, as it lets the user create their own boyfriend/girlfriend, which they look after and develop their skills. For example, their smooch quality or cleanliness. The aim is to keep increasing your Beau's traits, as there are frequent head-to-head competitions between friends, and having high-levelled traits will help you win them. On the other side of this, it's a social community where people can chat, hangout and dress and style their avatars together. I created History Popstars for 18- to 25-year olds with the intention of refreshing their knowledge of general world history. The idea came to me when I struggled to remember commonly known history facts, and wished there was a fun way of learning them again. The current trend and popular thing to do at the time with young adults was the new 'Animoji' on the iPhone X, so I used this as inspiration to create a game where users would make famous history figures sing funny songs and do funny dancing using face-recognition. The user would be informed about the figures life and the events that went on in that time, before being able to complete karaoke sessions with them.
