'Gradual Destruction'

This bespoke surface design collection has been inspired by the issue of erosion in nature, looking at the gradual destruction of the cliff faces and coastal scene of Brighton. This collection contrasts the use of hard and soft materials with a strong tactile theme throughout. The use of all-natural fibres such as leather, suede, denim and clay have been used to promote a sustainable ethos to each design. This collection shows a unique way of working with textiles, creating a contemporary reflection by combining classic processes with modern alternatives. With a hand-made approach, each piece expresses individualistic characteristics which mimic the environment they are inspired by. This personal touch is an important component to the finish of the collection, showing refinement in an organic style. A range of processes have been used including ceramic glazing, plaster casting and embedding, traditional and digital printing, as well as hand painting techniques. These overall processes help to represent a varied and captivating collection that involves a diversity of design combinations. The collection produced is intended to be displayed in bespoke, high-end interiors in both industrial and commercially based contexts. The designs are sculptural in effect, but have an inviting motion that can be placed in an open-plan space.
