Emily Hett

My practice explores how the intangible feeling of joy can be evoked through the aesthetics of tangible artworks, and how I can create a moment of this ephemeral response using flowing forms of vibrant colour and intricate pattern.

I investigate how we can cultivate positive emotion through art. Led by a process of play and improvisation but followed by selection and refinement, studies of microscopic imagery, seeds, coral and flora inform the basis of shapes in the development of my patterns. My artworks emerge as smooth, free flowing forms, unthreatening in their nature and exuberant in their colour. The adopted vehicle of the organic and sometimes biomorphic forms are not exact replicas of species found in nature and in turn, with no direct reference, they can be universally enjoyed. My degree course, alongside my placement year, have transformed my practice and given me the skills and confidence to pursue my ambition to acquire a studio and continue as a freelance artist.
