Video Installation

Video Installation

Courtney King

My video installation focuses on a glitch in the landscape, an abstraction of the environment, becoming a social comment on ecological issues. This installation is an immersive artificial environment, psychologically impacting and invasive to the viewer’s senses, by overwhelming visual imagery and sound.

I utilised colour and composition to develop an intangible strangeness, juxtaposition between the organic nature and manufactured technology. Achieved through simplified colour schemes, that contrasts the organic forms within the landscape, establishing the viewer with an alienation from nature. Images produced a pixelated effect, depicting negative connotations towards technology, due to its obscuring impact on nature. I want my work to have a psychological impact, this ambiguity and foreboding atmosphere causes a sense of anxiety to our ecological future and current state. I constantly investigate how far I can push an image to create this dysfunctional reality, before it becomes too difficult to recognise. I want this cacophony to create an uncomfortable environment encouraging discussions and questions of that artificial environment and hence the current state of our environment. I have continuous involvement and volunteering work at galleries, such as working in the surface Gallery Nottingham, where I experienced the role of stewarding, by invigilating exhibitions. In the past I have helped in curation process of the ‘Exhibitionist’ exhibition and helped coordinate the UK Young Artist Exhibition. I am dedicated in pursuing a career in curation, this course will help me achieve more knowledge within this field of work. I have always been highly interested in curatorial skills, especially when visiting galleries, often taking in the layout of different exhibitions. I have been applying for MA/MFA Curation courses in London and have been offered a place at Goldsmiths university.
